Do You Have to Have Car Insurance in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma law requires all drivers to maintain continuous liability insurance for any vehicle they have registered in the state. Policies must at least meet the state’s minimum liability coverage limits.

Oklahoma Minimum Car Insurance Requirements

Coverage Type Required by Law Limits
Bodily Injury Liability – Pays for medical expenses and legal costs if you injure someone in an accident. Yes $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability – Pays to repair or replace other people’s property damaged in an accident. Yes $25,000 per accident
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) – Pays for medical bills if the other driver lacks coverage. Not required –
Medical Payments Coverage (Med Pay) – Pays for medical expenses regardless of fault. Not required –
Collision – Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a collision. Not required¹ –
Comprehensive – Pays for non-collision damages like fire, vandalism, flood, or animal impact. Not required¹ –

Important: Liability-only coverage meets Oklahoma law but does not fully protect you or your vehicle. Additional coverage, like comprehensive and collision, and higher liability limits are recommended.

Additional Coverage Options

  • Roadside Assistance*
  • Emergency Protection Plan (EPP)*
  • Towing & Labor Coverage
  • Rental Reimbursement Coverage

Proof of Financial Responsibility and Penalties

Oklahoma drivers must provide proof of insurance when requested by law enforcement, during registration, or when obtaining a driver’s license. Failure to comply can lead to license and registration suspension, fines up to $350, and up to 30 days in jail.

Vehicles not used on public roads may file an Affidavit of Non-Use as an alternative to maintaining insurance.

Penalties for Driving with a Suspended License

Operating a vehicle without a valid license or with a suspended/revoked license can result in fines, jail time, and increased penalties for subsequent offenses.

SR-22 Insurance in Oklahoma

Oklahoma does not require SR-22 filings, but if you move to another state, you may need one if you have:

  • Been caught without proper liability coverage
  • Been convicted of a DUI/DWI
  • Committed other serious driving violations

EagleWay Auto Insurance can help drivers with SR-22 requirements and finding affordable coverage regardless of history.
